Career And Technical Education Programs - 990 Words

Career and Technical Education programs, known in the profession simply as CTE, provide students an opportunity to prepare for a wide range of careers. Students are exposed many disciplines including health care, agriculture, business, and graphic design. Through these programs students get to explore various career paths and get hands on training, which will help them to be more employable as they transition into the workforce. Holland (2013) notes that, â€Å"Despite stubbornly high unemployment, many employers complain that they can’t find qualified candidates. Often, the mismatch results from applicants’ inadequate communication skills.† As Holland points out, the need for skilled workers is extensive. In a time when unemployment rates are high there are plenty of people willing to work, but because of a shortage in literacy skills and experience, there are not many people able to work in these positions. Students who participate in CTE programs may be more prepared to enter the workforce because of the hands-on experience they receive in the classroom and through co-curricular programs such as DECA or FFA. In addition to not having experience, students are not employable because of their lack of communication skills. Students who are not literate are not able to communicate in writing with clients, coworkers, or a supervisor. An inability to express oneself effectively and coherently will render an individual unemployable.
